3. Mental process are influenced by social and cultural factors
Cole and Scribner
Procedure:
1. Researchers grabbed a group of children from Liberia and the U.S. of low and high education
2. Researchers made them take the children a series of memory tests such as abstraction, categorization and logic
3. Both groups were tested and the results were recorded
4. After this, children were given a list of words, that they knew culturally to remember for approximately 10 short seconds
5. Then researchers asked them to remember these other words, calabash, pan or plate and then write them down in a piece of paper
Findings:
1. Researchers found out that memory didn’t increase at all because of the lack of education
2. Participants from 9 to 10 years old who didn’t had education at all, showed a little improvement
3. They reminded 10 objects but just 2 after 15 trials
4. The children from Liberia that had assisted to school remembered the lit perfectly and the results were similar to the educated kids from the U.S
